Seafood Week 5th – 12th October 2007
‘Celebrating the Seafood Industry in the UK’
Seafood Week is all about raising the profile of our seafood
industry and encouraging consumers to eat at least two portions
of fish a week through the recognised ‘2aweek’ message.
This message is based on the Food Standards Agency’s recommendations
that we should all eat two portions of fish a week, one of which
should be oil-rich such as herring, mackerel, tuna, trout or salmon.
Seafood Week also gives us the opportunity to raise customer
awareness of the many different varieties of seafood available
and helps us dispel the ridiculous myth that ‘fish stocks
are running dry!’ Far from it! With continued correct management,
the seas surrounding Scotland will remain stocked with some of
the finest quality seafood you can find anywhere in the world.
We passionately support our Scottish fishermen in their continued
approach to the responsible fishing methods which guarantee a
sustainable future for our industry and our seas.
This year again we have lots of things going on during Seafood
Week at Anstruther Fish Bar, such as our daily fish tasting events,
annual children’s poster competition, special seafood offers
and in-store promotions plus all the usual fun and games. Come
along and see for yourself.

Our customers are now recognising seafood as being an essential
part of a healthy, balanced diet and are aware of the benefits
of seafood as a low fat nutritious alternative to other protein
foods. Did you know, for instance, that:
- The nation’s favourite dish - Fish and Chips have less
calories than other popular takeaways and a third less fat than
a Burger Whopper Meal!
- Seafood provides an important source of protein, vitamins,
minerals and omega-3 fatty acids
- A fish supper is a completely natural meal with just three
ingredients: FISH, POTATOES & BATTER You know exactly what you
are eating
The Big Fish Supper
Anstruther Fish Bar Charity Fundraising Events June & July
2007
We have had a busy summer raising funds for The Fishermen’s
Mission national charity event
“The Big Fish Supper” and have netted
a fantastic £993 with two big fundraising events and hope
to increase that amount with the games and competitions that are
being organised for customers in Anstruther Fish Bar during national
Seafood Week 5th – 12th October.
Charity Fish Suppers
We
decided to do something unusual, not only to raise much needed
funds for the Mission but also to raise customer awareness of
the charity and highlight the much needed support the Mission
provides fishermen and their families in the UK.
We contacted Mike Horn who organises an Open Sea Angling Competition
in the East Neuk of Fife every year, to ask if they would be interested
in donating their catch to the Fish Bar to help us raise funds
for the Mission. A very windy Sunday resulted in a lower catch
than previous years but we filleted and fried up the donations
of cod and ling to hungry customers in the record time of 1 hour
when we completely sold out. We raised £210
for the Mission in the process and now plan to make this an annual
fundraising event and hope for better weather conditions next
year.
Wear Your Wellies to Work Day
This was so much fun that we decided not just to wear them for
one day, but kept them on from the Friday through to Sunday. Not
just any old wellies of course – this gave us an excuse
to treat ourselves to some really ‘cool’ ones! Given
the wet summer we have had, some customers actually assumed the
wellies were part of our normal uniform and thought they looked
‘cute’?!
A huge £783 was raised from customer donations
in the Fish Bar and from the girls who volunteered to take their
collecting buckets along the harbour front much to the delight
of the tourists!
