Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve put together some responses to people’s frequently asked questions. We hope that you find this useful and lets you plan for your visit. We look forward to welcoming you!

Can I reserve a table?

With Covid restrictions now a thing of the past, we are back to our efficient queuing system for tables in the restaurant. Please stand at the ‘wait here to be seated’ sign and one of our team will bring you into the restaurant as soon as a table becomes available. Our 52-seat restaurant has a very quick turnaround. This is a successful tried and tested system that moves along very swiftly. Even on busy days when there is a queue, there’s never too long to wait.

Can I place a takeaway order by phone and collect later?

Sorry, but we don’t operate a ‘phone ahead’ service, as everything is cooked to order while you wait. Where possible, orders are taken when you join the queue and will be ready once you get to the counter. So, in effect, you are simply waiting for those customers in front to have their meals wrapped and paid for.

What oil do you fry in?

We use a highly refined beef dripping as our main frying medium, as we believe this traditional method produces the best results. We also have a smaller vegetable oil pan which can be used, if customers prefer.

Do you do a delivery service?

Not yet, but this is definitely something we plan to trial in the future. Please keep an eye on our social media pages for further details.

What time do you open/close?

We open every day at 11:30 and currently close at 9pm. Closing times differ depending on the season, so please see our website, Facebook page or Google for the current closing times.
Annual closing dates: 25th/26th December and 1st/2nd January.

Do you sell gift vouchers? How can I buy them?

Our AFB vouchers are really popular gifts for those ‘hard to buy for’ people! They come in £10 & £5 denominations and can be ordered by phone or by dropping us an email or a Facebook message with your details. We do take cheques/cash payments but would prefer payment by digital banking wherever possible. We always try to get the vouchers posted out to you on the same day as payment is received. Please get in touch for further information by emailing [email protected] or via a Facebook message.

Are you dog friendly? I have a small, well-behaved dog!

Like most restaurants, we have a ‘no pets’ policy. However, we love dogs and hate to see them getting left out, so are more than happy to give you a wee box or bag to take any leftovers home to your pup! In accordance with standard regulations, assistance dogs are permitted in the restaurant and takeaway areas.

We see you use 'cardboard' boxes in the restaurant, why don't you use plates?

In 2009, we took the decision to move to fully compostable tableware and packaging, replacing the recyclable and biodegradable items we used at that time. We sourced local Scottish company, Vegware, who since then, have supplied us with a range of quality products that are fully compostable and completely environmentally friendly.

Our side plates, bowls, oval plates, napkins, clear takeaway salad boxes, tartare sauce pots, cups, lids and straws are all made from a plant starch, making them 100% compostable and can be “returned to the earth in 180 days”.

Even our gloves and bin bags are compostable, allowing us to dispose of any restaurant food waste along with our tableware.

Do you sell any 'gluten free' meals?

We have regular event days* where we have a dedicated menu that’s suitable for customers who are coeliac or have a wheat intolerance (please see our Facebook page or website for upcoming dates). On these specific days, we offer a batter that is made with rice and soya flour, providing a perfect alternative to our traditional battered fish and prawns.

Outwith these special event days, we have a large range of seafood that can be grilled to meet your requirements. In addition, there are also salmon & dill fishcakes, smoked haddock fishcakes and smoked sausage, which do not contain gluten and can be cooked independently from other foods. Our chips are always cooked independently from everything else, and do not contain any gluten.

When placing your order, please let your server know that you require your meal cooked separately from other foods that might contain gluten and we will be happy to accommodate your request.

Someone in our group requires wheelchair access; do you have any disabled access?

We have disabled access on two of our three seating levels (the takeaway and main restaurant entrances involve a number of steps). If you require disabled access to our restaurant, please just talk to one of our friendly team who will take a note of your needs and explain the procedure for getting a table.

If you are on your own and would like to purchase a takeaway meal or dine in the restaurant, please knock on our ice cream parlour window and a member of staff will happily attend to your needs.

We are always on hand to help you with anything you might require. Please just ask.
