About Us

Generations of our family have lived and worked in the East Neuk
of Fife – predominantly in the fishing industry and can
be traced back as far as the late 1600s from father to son –
all fishermen from this area of Scotland. My father and grandfather
have been awarded MBEs for their services to the fishing industry,
but being colour blind meant I could never skipper my own trawler,
so in 1981 Alison and I set up our own fish processing business
– Argofish, in nearby St Monans producing fresh, hand-filleted
haddock to fish and chip shops and retail outlets in East and
Central Scotland.
In September 2003, our dream of expanding into the hospitality
sector by supplying our own prime Scottish seafood through Argofish,
became reality, as we became the new owners of The Anstruther
Fish Bar – our own local chippie!
By
effectively cutting out the middle-man we are now confidently
sourcing only the finest quality seafood ourselves, directly from
the local quayside each day and have essentially become our own
main supplier to the Anstruther Fish Bar - a fundamental factor
in increased customer confidence and our recent awards and recognitions.
On rare afternoons off, we all enjoy the opportunity to spend
time fishing in the Firth of Forth ourselves and frequently fill
our buckets with scores of mackerel within minutes of dropping
our lines! There’s nothing more satisfying than supplying
your own day’s catch to the ‘Catch of the Day’
board in time for tea! Served with chunky chips and a crunchy
salad, this is the ultimate fresh ‘fish supper’–
‘from line to dine’ in less than 1 hour!
Anstruther
Fish Bar is a true family business in every sense of the word
– including our three sons, we are all completely ‘hands-on’.
From the daily purchasing and processing of fresh local seafood,
right through to the frying and serving, every member of our family
is passionately involved at some stage or other in the whole supply
process of ‘net to plate’.
As part of the ‘Anstruther Fish Bar Experience’, we
provide visual entertainment throughout the restaurant and takeaway
area in the form of our own family fishing films depicting genuine
footage of life at sea from the 1950s to present day aboard our
father’s trawler MFV Argonaut. These popular films give
visitors a valuable insight into our heritage and the Scottish
Fishing Industry in the seas surrounding Scotland.
Anstruther Fish Bar is not just our family business, but is our
family life. We take a great deal of pride and care in building
on our reputation not just here in Scotland, but throughout the
world. As a family we have a deep understanding and passion for
the whole industry and are proud we can contribute to its further
development.
