Local Food Hero 2007
We were delighted to hear we had made it through to the final
six ‘Local Food Heroes’ as voted for by viewers on
the Gary Rhodes TV programme of the same name.
This involved us in the filming for the TV series with Scotland’s
own ‘food hero’ Tom Lewis of Monachyle Mohr fame interviewing
us whilst enjoying a freshly cooked fish supper. Now bearing in
mind this man also happens to own his own fish and chip shop in
Callander (Mohr Fish), we were giving away no secrets when it
came to divulging the contents of our batter!
We travelled south to the Plymouth TV studios (September 2007)
to film the big cook-off for Gary Rhodes himself, taking with
us some of the finest local prawns, prime Scottish haddock from
John Buchan’s ‘Ocean Venture’ and our own-smoked
haddock cutlets accompanied by a bag of our premium potatoes (local
too, of course!)
We met so many interesting, friendly people during the making
of this programme – who, like ourselves have a true passion
for their job and go out their way to source only the best quality
local food available for their customers.

Silver 2007
EatScotland Silver 2008
We are delighted to receive a prestigious EatScotland Silver Award
for the second year running in recognition of the “high
standards of cuisine, service and the overall eating out experience”
customers receive at Anstruther Fish Bar.
These awards were launched by the Scottish Tourist Board in 2007
in a bid to boost standards in eating establishments across Scotland
and celebrate excellence, and ultimately boost tourism by changing
perceptions of Scottish cuisine on a worldwide scale.
As one of only 48 award winners we are now listed alongside other
famous eateries such as The Three Chimneys, The Witchery, The
Oloroso Restaurant and The Westin Turnberry as recommended dining
experiences in Scotland.
Scotland’s ‘Fish and Chip
Shop of the Year 2006 – 07’
Alison, Robert and family are delighted to announce The Anstruther
Fish Bar has just been awarded the coveted title of Scotland’s
‘Fish and Chip Shop of the Year 2006 – 07’ for
the third time in 6 years. Standards this year were especially
high, with competition coming from The Townhead Café in
Biggar, Lanarkshire as the other Scottish semi-finalist.
This
annual competition, organised by industry body Seafish and now
in its 19th year, is one of the biggest events in the frying sector
diary. Seafish recognises and awards fish and chip shops for producing
the best fish & chips in the UK in an excellent environment.
The Seafish Industry Authority offers a wealth of knowledge, skills
and support across the whole seafood industry including the catching
sector, processors, retailers, restaurants, fish and chip shops
through to the consumer and has gone a long way in helping raise
the profile of the UK’s 11,500 fish and chip shops while
also increasing public awareness of the health benefits associated
with including more seafood as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

In recent years however, the reputation of the Fish Bar has been
recognised on a more national level. As well as being recommended
in numerous newspaper and magazine editorials, the Anstruther
Fish Bar has appeared in many national television and radio programmes
such
as 'Scottish Passport', 'The Holiday Programme', 'Scotland's Larder'
and most recently the live BBC Radio Scotland's road shows hosted
by the famous duo Colin & Justin and Scotland's own Brian Burnett
and Vic Galloway from the BBC Campervan outside the shop!

During 2004, Talking Island Productions made a lengthy feature
on the success of the business for Japanese television, while
American Golfing Presenter, Chad Maulmsby filmed part of an episode
of The Wandering Golfer, The Fine Living Channel (USA) from the
kitchen and restaurant of the Fish Bar! Visits from Gaelic Kids
TV, occasional German, Swedish and various other film crews, all
desperate to get an insight into the fish and chip industry, have
finally got the staff enjoying their moment of TV fame!

Over the years the Anstruther
Fish Bar has built up a large and loyal customer base. We
would not be where we are today without our local customers
and would like to thank them for their patronage.
To all our hardworking staff – well
done and thank you!
